Pools and spas can quickly become home to algae, bacteria, unwanted impurities, and organic matter. Chlorine helps sanitise the water, keeping it safe and clean for users. However, sunlight can reduce chlorine's effectiveness by breaking it down, causing it to combine with impurities and lowering the ‘free’ chlorine available to continue sanitising the water. This is where shock treatments come into play.

Shock treatments involve applying a strong dose of chlorine once a week, or whenever an extra boost in sanitisation is needed, allowing chlorine levels to quickly become effective again.

It’s best to apply chlorine shock in the evening so it can work uninterrupted by sunlight. You should also shock the pool after heavy rain, if it’s had frequent use, or when you first notice signs of algae. Chlorine shock can also help clear up cloudy water. Making shock treatments part of your regular pool maintenance routine is a smart way to keep your water in top condition.

How to use

  1. Maintain pH level within the ideal range of 7.2 – 7.6. If not in this range, adjust. Maintain free chlorine level within the ideal range of 3 – 5mg/l.
  2. Commissioning freshly filled new hot tubs or ones left drained for a period of time: Following the latest guidance, a commissioning dose of 50mg/l free chlorine maintained for a minimum of one hour is recommended. A chlorine reducer may be required for early bathing to commence following this commissioning dose.
  3. If the water temperature is 200C or higher, this product can be carefully broadcast directly over the hot tub water surface. If in doubt, pre-dissolve this product in a clean plastic container at a rate of 10g per one litre of clean warm water. Stir well to ensure the product is fully dissolved, then add to the hot tub with the filter running.
  4. This product is also ideal for establishing a free chlorine residual when using AquaSPArkle Spa Bromine Pods or slow-release tablets. Sanitiser levels can take a while to establish when using either of these methods.
  5. Spa Rapid Shock is also ideal for regular oxidation (shock treatment) to 5 or 10 mg/l of free chlorine.
  6. After using this product, the hot tub water may become temporarily cloudy. Keep the filtration running until it clears.
  7. Always allow the free chlorine or bromine level to fall to 5mg/l or below before hot tub use resumes.
